Moonlight Peaks Critter Guide: Bug Catching, Rare Spawns & Best Sellers

How critter catching works in Moonlight Peaks — net butterflies, beetles, snails and bugs by season and location to fill the Almanac and Museum. The highest-value critters, and the special spawns (Midnight, Sprouty, Pumkrawler, Sunny) with unusual catch conditions.

Moonlight Peaks has a whole nocturnal ecosystem waiting to be caught in a net. Critters — butterflies, beetles, fireflies, snails and stranger things — are one of the game’s biggest collections, feeding both your Almanac and the Museum’s Critter room. There are over a hundred to find, spread across every season and location, and this guide covers how catching works, the best sellers worth prioritising, and the special spawns you’ll never stumble on by accident.

How critter catching works

You catch critters with your net — the same tool that nets soul blobs. Each new species you catch is logged in your Almanac and can be donated to the Museum’s Critter room, which is the single largest room to fill. Catch a species you already have and it becomes a sale item instead, so critters double as a light income stream while you explore.

Two rules make or break a hunt:

  • Season matters. Most critters only appear in one or two seasons — a Frost Flutter is a winter-only farm visitor, an Aura shows up in autumn.
  • Location matters. Each critter favours a specific area — Moonlit Pines, Luna Bay, Howling Marshes, Misty Shores, the Pink Grove, or the caves. Learn the map and you’ll know where to swing.

A butterfly drifts through the snowy Moonlit Pines at night — many critters appear only in a single season and location.

The critter families

The Almanac sorts critters into a few groups, each with its own hunting grounds:

  • Butterflies — by far the largest group and the prettiest, ranging all over the map. The Cave of Echoes is a butterfly goldmine (Diamontra, Fader, Jader, White Bat).
  • Beetles — ground-dwellers around the pines, marshes and graveyard. Includes some of the best special spawns.
  • Flies — the Firefly (Summer/Autumn, Moonlit Pines, 100 coins) is the standout, glowing in the dark to give itself away.
  • Bugs — spiders, slimes and stickbugs, several tied to farming and autumn.
  • Snails & slugs — slow, weather- and location-specific, plus a couple of oddities filed here (the Twilight Catacombs “rats” Harry and Maud, and sentient eggs).

Highest-value critters

If you’re catching for coins as much as completion, these are the confirmed top earners worth going out of your way for:

The clear takeaway: the Cave of Echoes is the best single critter-farming spot — three 110-coin butterflies plus the 250-coin White Bat all live there. Pair a mining run with a butterfly sweep.

Special spawns (the ones you’d never find by accident)

Some critters ignore the normal season-and-place rules and only appear under specific conditions. These are the ones players hunt for completion:

The reedy wetlands of the Howling Marshes at night — prime hunting ground for beetles, slimes and marsh-dwelling critters.

  • Midnight (beetle, 50) — appears on your Player Farm at exactly 00:00. Be out with your net as the clock strikes midnight.
  • Sprouty (spider, 110) — can spawn after you harvest any crop. A lucrative reason to keep your net out on harvest days.
  • Pumkrawler (spider) — appears after harvesting a Pumpkin in Autumn.
  • Sunny (sentient egg, 10) — shows up on the farm after you cook an egg (Spring–Autumn); its “Deviled Sunny” variant is a rarer cousin.
  • Skullglint & Skully — graveyard specialists, found in the Ambrosia Graveyard (Skully in Autumn).
  • Sluggy (slug, 15) — only in Moonlit Pines while it’s raining, in Winter.
  • Psyclops (beetle, 25) — appears in spots where Yabbis rotates, across Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Tips for critter hunting

  • Farm the Cave of Echoes. It’s the highest-density spot for valuable butterflies — combine it with a mining trip.
  • Keep your net out on harvest days. Sprouty (110) and Pumkrawler can pop the moment you harvest, and they’re easy to miss.
  • Catch the midnight window. Midnight the beetle only spawns at 00:00 on your farm — a five-minute habit that ticks another Almanac box.
  • Donate before you sell. Always check whether a critter is new to the Museum before offloading it — the Critter room is the biggest completion track in the game.
  • Chase seasonal critters before the season turns. Many appear in a single season; missing one means waiting a full in-game year.

Frequently asked questions

How do you catch critters in Moonlight Peaks?

You catch critters — butterflies, beetles, fireflies, snails and other bugs — with your net, the same tool you use on soul blobs. Each new species is logged in your Almanac and can be donated to the Museum's Critter room, and duplicates sell for coins. Most appear in specific locations and seasons, and some only spawn under special conditions.

What is the most valuable critter in Moonlight Peaks?

Among confirmed sell prices, the Aura butterfly (Autumn, Misty Shores) tops the list at 280 coins, followed by the White Bat butterfly at 250 (Cave of Echoes). Several Cave of Echoes butterflies — Diamontra, Fader and Jader — sell for 110 each, making the cave one of the best critter-farming spots.

How do you catch the Midnight beetle?

The Midnight beetle only appears on your own Player Farm at 00:00 — literally midnight. Be out on the farm with your net as the clock rolls over. It sells for 50 coins and is one of several critters with a special spawn condition rather than a fixed season.

Where do critters come from after harvesting crops?

A couple of critters spawn from farming itself: Sprouty (a spider worth 110 coins) can appear after you harvest any crop, and Pumkrawler shows up after harvesting a Pumpkin in Autumn. Sunny, a 'sentient egg' critter, appears on the farm after you cook an egg.
